In addition to listed Solo cabin rates, select double-occupancy cabins may be available for single occupancy with a single supplement fee. If you would like to share accommodations with another guest of the same gender, we will be happy to try to accommodate you in select cabin categories. On the ship, I found the crew and nature experts to be friendly and knowledgeable about the region and local wildlife.
Once while getting dressed, I was surprised to see a small whale swim right by my window. The normal price of this cruise is around $4,800 per person, but as a prize winner, I received the trip for free, which included food and nonalcoholic drinks onboard. In August, I paid for my own flight from Portland, Oregon, where I'd just finished 70 days of camping and volunteering for AmeriCorps, to Sitka, Alaska, to depart on the cruise. Last spring, I was one of five winners of a college writing contest for environmental storytelling. As a prize, the five of us received a free, six-day cruise that summer in Alaska. In addition, National Geographic Quest achieves some other notable firsts.

Comfortably accommodating 100 guests, National Geographic Venture has a shallow draft depth, allowing us to navigate the inner reaches and provide the same intimate experiences of the charismatic regions we explore. Her twin expedition craft landing platforms allow us to rapidly get on and off the ship to take advantage of wildlife sightings and to ensure we maximize our time off the ship exploring. She also features a shallow draft, allowing her Captain to navigate the inner reaches and provide more intimate experiences. Today explore the LeConte Glacier, one of the most active glaciers in Southeast Alaska and the southernmost tidewater glacier in the Northern Hemisphere. Icebergs regularly break off from the glacier face, getting caught in this shallow moraine and along the shoreline.
National Geographic Venture Overview
Since it was August during salmon spawning season that began in June, the naturalists explained the salmon encouraged brown bears and eagles to come out to hunt. I usually wore Crocs or sneakers, waterproof pants, a long sleeve shirt, and a puffer jacket to stay warm on deck. When we went on the Zodiac rafts, I also wore knee-high boots to avoid wet feet. Some passengers brought their own waterproof pants and boots, but I used rentals that the cruise offered instead. It was warmer than I expected on the cruise, between 50 to 60 degrees on average.

We didn't see any animals, so I focused on photographing the underbrush.

Three bears, a humpback whale and a bald eagle lingered along our icy path, cementing the magic of spring in Southeast Alaska. We’ll never forget the zodiac cruise rides to see icebergs and glaciers! Our 9 year old twins were particularly impressed by the “vikings” who surprised us with hot chocolate during one of the rides. This was our first ever cruise, so we have no comparison, but we loved this way of seeing Alaska. The views were amazing and the ship’s captain would stop if there was interesting sea life or wildlife spotted.
Disembark the ship in Ketchikan, the southeasternmost city in Alaska, spread at the base of forested slopes on Revillagigedo Island. Its many monikers, from salmon capital of the world to rain capital of Alaska, capture the spirit of this city, famous for its colorful buildings and abundant fishing boats and canneries. Visit the Totem Heritage Center to view a unique collection of 19th-century Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian totem poles from abandoned villages around Ketchikan before transferring to the airport for flights home. Embark on an epic journey across the Northwest Passage from Greenland to Alaska, and follow in the footsteps of intrepid explorers who searched for centuries for a northwest route connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
Have a look at what fellow travelers have to say and see what floats your boat. The atmosphere was relaxed and casual and we had a lot of fun meeting our 92 fellow passengers, who seemed to enjoy the same type of vacation experience as we did. Modern, clean-lined, with large expanses of glass to take in the extraordinary views, National Geographic Quest enables guests to see, do, and experience the best of her geographies. In Southeast Alaska, a pod of humpback whales engage in an intricate hunting method called bubble-net feeding.
The experienced captain will read the ice and bring the ship as close as possible to the glacier. Then set out by expedition landing craft to navigate among the surreal floating sculptures. Their knowledge and passion for Alaska is the key to your once-in-a-lifetime experience. Experience the surprisingly colorful life below water through video shot by the undersea specialist.

My Upper Deck cabin was nicely configured with well-thought-out details, including numerous hooks for jackets and gear. The sliding balcony door locked in place at various points, allowing for controlled amounts of fresh air. A combination of firm and soft pillows topped the comfy bed, and electrical outlets and USB ports were within easy reach.
